Adding custom MX records on your cPanel hosting service
Posted Thursday July 13th 2017 / Category Email

If you’re using the VentraIP cPanel web hosting nameservers you may wish to customise your MX records; to add, remove or edit records as required.

This will be required if linking up mail for your domain hosting to our dedicated business email services or a service like Office365 and GSuite.

To add a new record

  1. Login to your cPanel service.
  2. Click on Zone Editor.
  3. Select Manage next to the domain you wish to edit.
  4. Select Add Record from the top to add your new record. You will need to specify the priority and destination.
  5. Repeat for all needed MX records

To edit an existing record

  1. Login to your cPanel service.
  2. Click on Zone Editor.
  3. Select Manage next to the domain you wish to edit.
  4. Select MX from the filter option on top of the chart
  5. Select Edit on the MX record(s) displayed as required.

To delete an existing record

  1. Login to your cPanel service.
  2. Click on Zone Editor.
  3. Select Manage next to the domain you wish to edit.
  4. Select “MX” from the filter option on top of the chart
  5. Select Delete on the MX record(s) displayed as required.

Please be aware that DNS records edited in here only work if the VentraIP cPanel web hosting nameservers are being used; if any other nameservers are being used on the domain these records will not be applicable and you need to adjust these records on the DNS zone your nameservers apply to.

When DNS records are adjusted please allow up to 24 hours for DNS to propagate.

Email Routing

While it should be set to dynamically update automatically, It’s always worth checking “Email Routing” in cPanel after adjusting MX records to make sure this is set correctly.

If your MX record is just pointing at our server and you use cPanel for your email then it should be “Local”

If your MX is pointing to an external server (Such as our mentioned dedicated business mail, Office 365 or GSuite) then it should be “Remote”

The Automatic setting should be fine also which will dynamically update when it checks your MX record, But it’s worth checking if you are seeing issues.
