How do I customise my MX records within cPanel?
Posted Tuesday April 29th 2014 / Category DNS

If you’re using the VentraIP cPanel web hosting nameservers you may wish to customise your MX records; to add, remove or edit records as required.

To add a new record

  1. Login to your cPanel service.
  2. Click on the Zone Editor icon. Note: You’d be better off using ‘Zone Editor’ not the ‘Simple’ or ‘Advanced’ Zone Editors as cPanel is phasing those options out.
  3. From here you can click + MX Record to quickly add a record.
  4. Enter the priority of the record and it’s destination.
  5. Click Add an MX Record.

To edit an existing record

  1. Login to your cPanel service.
  2. Click on the Zone Editor icon. Note: You’d be better off using ‘Zone Editor’ not the ‘Simple’ or ‘Advanced’ Zone Editors as cPanel is phasing those options out.
  3. Click Manage to the right of the domain you wish to edit.
  4. Filter the records by MX.
  5. Identify the record you wish to amend and click Edit.
  6. Adjust the priority and/or destination as required.
  7. Click Save Record to save.

To delete an existing record

  4. Filter the records by MX
  5. Identify the record you wish to remove and click Delete.
  6. Press the Continue button which appears to confirm it’s removal.

Please be aware that DNS records edited in here only work if the VentraIP cPanel web hosting nameservers are being used; if any other nameservers are being used on the domain these records will not be applicable.

If you opt to use an external MX host, we recommend changing your “Email Routing” on the MX entry page to “Remote Mail Exchanger”; if you’re using the local server (default) for email we recommend leaving this option on “Automatically Detect Configuration”.

When DNS records are adjusted please allow up to 24 hours for DNS to propagate.
