What's the difference between domain names and web hosting?
Updated Thursday February 4th 2021 / Category Web Hosting

What is a domain name?

A domain name is simply the registration of a name. So for example, just the name ventraip.com.au.

Purchasing a domain name basically just gives you ownership of that name, and you can whatever you’d like with it. Such as host a website and/or some email accounts.

What is a web hosting service?

A website (and sometimes email accounts) needs a home, and that’s what you would use a web hosting service for. A web hosting service is essentially a slot on one of our services, where we provide you with some disk space and other resources, which allow you to host a website.

Purchasing and renewing these services

Domain names and web hosting services are purchased and renewed separately, they’re not one in the same.

If you renew your domain name, that doesn’t mean you also renewed your web hosting service. And vice versa.
