Web Hosting Backup Essentials: Back It Up!
January 7, 2019 | Written by Angelo Giuffrida | 2 min read

Reversing a car into a parking space, holding off a wannabe aggressor, or even dropping suggestive dance moves at the local nightclub, the phrase ‘back it up’ is relevant in many different scenarios (not all of them good). However, when it comes to web hosting backups, backing it up is undoubtedly a positive move.

Although many website hosting providers out there will store extra copies of all of your website’s files and data, it is always in your best interests to save your own. Having your backup can be helpful in several different situations:

  1. Service has been cancelled

Whether this is due to missing payment or a simple mistake, having your backup can add some extra reassurance and save you some money. Fortunately, here at VentraIP Australia, we restore your local backup for free!

  2. Hacking

While there are protections on the content management system you may be using, getting hacked is always possible. One of the best ways to mitigate any potential damage resulting from hacking is to ensure that you have a backup readily available. Alongside this, it is always recommended to perform updates on the CMS that you are regularly using.

  3. Human error

When making changes to your website, there is always the odd chance that you may delete a file that you still need. Having a readily available backup can ensure that you can quickly rectify errors such as this.

How do I make my backup?

The process involved will differ across providers and between VentraIP Australia hosting plans. It is always recommended to check with your provider what backups you have available to you and how often they are automatically taken for your service.

cPanel Backups: A general cPanel backup can be generated via the backup wizard, and you can find the complete steps for the backup wizard here. These are the only backups available on our Legacy Economy services. However, you can access them across all of our cPanel hosting services.

R1soft Backups: These are only available on our Legacy Business plans and our VPS range (Fully managed and self-managed). you can find the steps to access and download each below:

Business Plans: R1soft Guide

Acronis Backups: Each of our new shared hosting and reseller hosting plans utilises this backup system and provides multiple daily backups! To access it, you need to log in to your cPanel account and select the ‘Acronis Backup’ option under the files section.

Regardless of the type of website you are running, backups are a core component that you should not neglect. It is not enough to rely solely on your provider for backups. At the same time, only having local backups can be a recipe for disaster.
