Introducing PHP 7.0 | Making the Move is Simple
It’s been a long time coming and we’re happy to announce that PHP 7.0 is officially available on all of VentraIP’s shared hosting servers! The first major update in over a decade, PHP 7.0 has seen a number of changes aimed to improve usability and performance.
Better, Faster, Stronger
Official benchmarks released earlier in the year left us wanting more with PHP 7 performing twice that of its predecessors on WordPress-based tests, as shown below.
With over 70 million concurrent WordPress websites online at the moment, many of our customers will enjoy a nice boost in performance and resource management when making the change over to PHP 7. We’re certain customers using similar applications will also see an improvement in website response and loading times, particularly those experiencing a relatively high flow of traffic.
In addition to the above, PHP 7.0 comes with a new version of the Zend Engine, providing numerous improvements and features such as:
- Significantly Reduced Memory Usage
- Consistent 64-bit Support
- Improved Exception Hierarchy
- Abstract Syntax Tree
- Return and Scalar Type Declarations
- Zero-Cost Asserts
- The Null Coalescing Operator (??)
Amongst many other features!
Make the Change Today
We feel it is important to note that PHP 7.0 will see a number of features deprecated from previous versions. As such, we recommend taking the time to read through one of many migration guides available online prior to performing any changes.
Upgrading to PHP 7.0 is exceptionally easy thanks to the PHP Selector tool found in your cPanel account. To access this tool, simply follow the steps outlined below:
- Login to your VIPControl Account
- Click on ‘Manage my Hosting’
- Select the Hosting Service you Wish to Adjust and Click the ‘cPanel’ Button to Login
- Under the ‘Software and Services’ Subheading, Click the ‘Select PHP Version’ Tool
- Simply Change PHP Version to 7.0 and Save Changes!
CloudLinux OS Servers
If you’re using a server with CloudLinux OS, you may have noticed that PHP 7.0 is not yet readily available. To install PHP 7.0 onto your server, simply run the following command:
yum groupupdate alt-php
