Adding password protection to files and folders

It is possible to add password protection to your web directories/folders, making it easy to lock things down whilst in development or when keeping pages away from the general public. Using password protection will set a username and password prompt for accessing a particular directory in web browsers. It sets up a htpasswd configuration.

  1. Log in to your cPanel service.
  2. Click the Directory Privacy under Files.
  3. Click Edit next to the folder you want to password protect (click on a folder to select a sub-folder to password protect)
  4. Check the “Password protect this directory.” checkbox on
  5. Optionally change the name of the protected directory to something you prefer over the default
  6. Click Save
  7. Click Go Back
  8. Under Create User, input a Username and Password for the protected directory
  9. Click Save
