How do I use the Free DNS Hosting options in VIPControl?
Posted Monday April 28th 2014 / Category DNS

For any domain name which you have registered with VentraIP, we provide Free DNS hosting. This will allow you manage A, MX, CNAME, TXT, NS and SRV records of the domain zone without the need for a hosting service. This is especially helpful if you wish to use us for your external DNS hosting and have hosting elsewhere, or you simply want to use Google Apps (or similar) without the need for a website.

If you already have cPanel hosting on the domain name, you can also edit your DNS zone inside of cPanel. Changing over to the VIPControl Free DNS hosting system will cause your website to go offline (unless you create the A record on the VIPControl Free DNS hosting to point to your hosting account). In this case, we strongly recommend using cPanel for managing your DNS zone, as this will automatically update the zone when you create, modify or add subdomains, or if your acocunt is migrated to another server.

Enabling Free DNS hosting on your domain name

  1. Login to your VIPControl account.
  2. Click the Manage my Domains button on your VIPControl dashboard.
  3. Click on the domain you want to create the Free DNS zone for.
  4. Click on the Manage DNS option in the drop down options.
  5. Change the domain service to Free DNS Hosting.

Please note: This will change the name servers on your domain name. If you have hosting elsewhere (or with us) on that domain name, we highly recommend you use your hosting account to manage your DNS zone and do not change to the VIPControl free DNS hosting option.

6. Confirm you understand that your name servers will be changed (by clicking OK).

Adding A, MX, CNAME, TXT, NS or SRV records to your DNS zone

  1. Login to your VIPControl account.
  2. Click Manage my Domains button on your VIPControl dashboard.
  3. Select the domain name you’re configuring for Free DNS Hosting.
  4. Using the drop down menu, click Manage DNS.
  5. Click the Add Record button.
  6. Select the record type you wish to add, then enter the records as required.

Using the one-click Google Apps MX button

The one-click Google Apps MX button has been designed to allow you to easily insert the MX records that are required to use Google Apps, rather than needing to insert them one by one.

  1. Login to your VIPControl account.
  2. Click Manage my Domains button on your VIPControl dashboard.
  3. Select the domain name you’re configuring for Free DNS Hosting.
  4. Using the drop down menu, click Manage DNS.
  5. Click on the Add Google Apps MX button.
  6. Check the MX records that will be added, and click Add Records to confirm.

Please note: The one-click Google Apps MX button will not remove any existing MX records that are on the DNS zone, it will simply add the required one. If you have already existing MX records, please ensure that they are removed or your mail may not function correct. For further information, please refer to the Google Apps Help Centre.

Changing the TTL on all your records in a single click

Time to live (TTL) is a mechanism that limits the lifespan that the record will be kept in DNS cache servers around the world. The VIPControl Free DNS hosting service has an option to ‘mass update’ the TTL on all your DNS records for ease when modifying the TTL on records.

  1. Login to your VIPControl account.
  2. Click the Manage my Domains button on your VIPControl homepage.
  3. Select the domain name you’re configuring for Free DNS Hosting.
  4. Using the drop down menu, click Manage DNS.
  5. Click on the Mass TTL Change button
  6. Input the TTL you’d like all the records changed to (in seconds), and click Update.

Please note: The recommended TTL to be using is 14400 (which is 4 hours).
