Third-party website monitoring services

What to do when a 3rd party monitoring tool is reporting your website is down

Here are a couple of things you should do when your 3rd party monitoring service reports your website as down:

  • Try to visit your website, see if it’s down for you as well.
  • Check our service status page (https://status.ventraip.com.au/)
  • Check that your domain name is registered and all other services you have with us are active. This can be done in VIPControl.

If you have checked all of those things, feel free to send a ticket to our tech support team for further assistance.

False positives

There are a couple of important things to keep in mind when using 3rd party monitoring systems. One key thing to note here is that 3rd party monitoring systems may not always be 100% accurate. This is because there is often a significant amount of internet infrastructure between the monitoring system and our servers.

This means that any requests the monitoring system sends to your website to check if it’s up, need to pass through routers and servers that neither end controls. If there are any problems with the infrastructure in the middle, that monitoring system could falsly assume the website is down.

Most monitoring systems will check to see if your website is online from multiple different locations around the world. If one or two locations are reporting it as down but the others are not, it may be safe to assume that your website and/or hosting service is online, and another problem outside of the control of your monitoring platform, yourself and us, is causing the problem.
