What To Do if Your MX Records are Invalid or Missing
Your domain’s MX records are missing or not set correctly. Without valid MX records, your domain cannot receive email.
What are MX records?
MX records tell the internet where to deliver your email. If they’re missing or wrong, incoming emails will fail to arrive.
Locate your Email Hosting Provider
- cPanel Email (your hosting service) → use the DNS records below.
- Other Email Host (e.g. Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, VentraIP Business Email Hosting) → use the MX records they provide.
DNS Records for cPanel Email
If you are using cPanel hosting for Emails, but your domains DNS is hosted outside cPanel (e.g. VentraIP DNS Hosting in VIPcontrol, Cloudflare or another domain registrar), you’ll need to add these manually.
(If you use cPanel DNS, these records are usually set automatically.)
Hostname | Type | Value / Points to | TTL |
---|---|---|---|
@ or yourdomain.com | MX | mail.yourdomain.com (Priority 0) | 3600 or leave default |
A | Your cPanel server IP | 3600 or leave default |
|
@ or yourdomain.com | TXT | v=spf1 +a +mx +include:spf.hostingplatform.net.au ~all |
3600 or leave default |
autodiscover | A | Your cPanel server IP | 3600 or leave default |
autoconfig | A | Your cPanel server IP | 3600 or leave default |
webmail | A | Your cPanel server IP | 3600 or leave default |
Replace yourdomain.com
with your actual domain name, and use the Server IP shown in VIPcontrol or cPanel.
DKIM records are also recommended for extra email security, but are optional. You can find your DKIM Record in cPanel > Email Deliverability
Avoid conflicts
- Only keep one set of MX records.
- If using Microsoft 365, Google, or another provider → do not also keep the cPanel MX records.
In Short
- Using cPanel Email? → Add the MX + A + SPF records (plus autodiscover, autoconfig, webmail for best results).
- Using another provider? → Only use the MX records they supply.
- cPanel DNS users: These are normally added for you automatically.
Once updated, it may take 2-8 hours to update due to DNS Propagation. After that, inbound emails should arrive succesfully!
