Domain Validation (DV) Process for SSL Certificates

Domain Validation (DV)

Domain Validation (DV) is a step used to prove ownership and control of the domain(s) you are trying to get an SSL certificate signed for, Any SSL certificate will go through this process while higher ones (Such as Organization Validation “OV” and Extended Validation “EV” type certificates) will have further steps to be completed before the SSL is completed and made available to use.

This process concerns: PositiveSSL Comodo SSL Premium SSL Wildcard SSL

Comodo offers several validation methods for Domain Validation and the process can be completed as quickly as 15 minutes!, These methods include: Email verification, DNS, and WHOIS.

In general, email validation is the default and most convenient method but it’s up to you how you chose to complete this step. A basic overview of each type can be found below:

Email Validation

Comodo can validate your domain(s) by sending an email message to the domains’ administrators. If you choose this method, you select who receives the email from a set of email addresses that includes addresses listed in the domain’s WHOIS record. When the email is received, all the person who receives it must do is to click a link in the email. This opens a web page where the person clicks one button to validate the domain(s).

DNS Validation

Comodo can validate your domain(s) by providing you a unique code to place in your domains’ DNS zone. You enter the code as a CNAME resource record, which is an informational type of DNS resource record. Comodo then checks your DNS record for the code, which will prove that the person who controls the DNS record for your domain(s) also authorized the certificate request.

Domain Beacon Validation

Comodo can validate your domain(s) by providing you a file to place on your website. When Comodo retrieves this file from your website, it proves that the person who controls the content of your website also authorized the certificate request.

After all of your domains have been validated from the CSR that was provided the validation will be completed for a DV Certificate and it should be issues shortly after.

If you are validating an OV or EV Certificate it will move to the next step which you can read about on the respective links.
