What is an IP address?
An IP address is a unique number assigned to every device connected to the internet — like a postal address for your computer. It tells other devices where to send data when you browse websites, send emails, or connect to services.
Public vs private
The address above is your public IP — what the internet sees when you connect. Your local devices also have private IPs (like 192.168.x.x) that only work within your home or office network.
When you might need this
- Whitelisting — Some services restrict access to specific IPs for security
- Troubleshooting — Support may ask for your IP to diagnose connection issues
- Firewall rules — Server access controls need to know which IP to allow
- Remote access — Connecting to your network from outside requires your public IP
